Oh, say can you scorch

Once again, the U.S. House has voted for a constitutional amendment that would ban physical desecration of the U.S. flag. Observers say that for the first time, the measure has a good chance of passing the Senate, too.

This fight is getting old. I've written about it numerous times over the years, including here (see the last item, then note Pat Dawson's infantile comment). I've made more extended arguments, but either I can't find them or they appeared in the ancient pre-web days.

Let's settle here for just one point: "physical desecration" is a fundamentally dishonest term. Except among idol worshippers, the quality of sacredness exists solely in the mind and soul of the observer. You can't physically desecrate things that exist only in people's heads. The flag's value is purely symbolic, and the freedom to choose for ourselves what symbols we hold sacred is about as fundamental as freedom gets. By protecting the flag, we diminish it.

Hypothetical question. Suppose you come upon some flag burners, and they're burnin' a Murcan flag. In your patriotism, and due to the fact that there is no water accessible, you whizz on the flag to put it out. Who goes to jail, the burners or the whizzer? And what if you happen to drop a Koran on the flag while your whizzin', does THAT make whizzin' of the flag OK? It's so confusing! And gee, guess I'll have to get rid of my red, white, and blue condoms! Oh well, they may have been USA colors, but they were on a French Tickler!.....oops! I mean a Freedom Tickler! Freedom ain't free you know! The Freedom Ticklers cost me plenty!

Just an old fart who finds rightwing morons to be very, very funny indeed!

DAMN, Jimmy. Now THAT was a leap of logic worthy of Bob Beamon! But I'll do you one better. WHY THE HELL SHOULD A CORPORATION HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS AN INDIVIDUAL?! Easy answer: they shouldn't! Corporations are NOT people. Therefore, your argument is pure baloney. But hey, you already knew that! Why should say, BIG TOBACCO, be able to give sen. cornhole burns MILLIONS AND MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of dollars, in essence, buying themselves a senate seat? Can Montanans compete against BIG TOBACCO, or say the NRA?? No, they can't, Jimmy. Ya see, Jimbo, some of feel that the people should be able to determine who represents them in D.C. And a corporation ain't a people!

Tony, stuff them in your red, white and blue condoms and use them for conversation pieces! French Ticklers become Freedom Ticklers!
