Ballots up close
Here are the five ballots I mentioned in the post below. All five were counted for Jore, and a district judge agreed. But they are pretty similar, aren't they?
My instinct is that the votes were meant for Jore, but how can anyone be sure? If I accidentally voted for the wrong candidate (and was too lazy or stupid or whatever to get a fresh ballot), I suspect I would put an "X" over the candidate I did not want. But how can I be sure others would do the same? Why didn't they circle the one they wanted? Why didn't they get a new ballot? Why must we even discuss it if the law states ballots with more than one mark should not be counted?
