U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns places great value on my advice and opinions. Or so he says in a letter that showed up at my house last week.
He values my opinions so much that he asked me to fill out a three-page survey detailing my views to help him verify that he shares the majority view in Montana on key issues. Among the questions, none of which I'm making up:
"Did you support the President's decision to oust the murderous regime of Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq?"
"Are you angry with how the United Nations and so-called 'allies' like France and Germany have undermined our efforts in Iraq and the war on terror?"
"Does it anger you that the courts are more and more ruling against our religious liberties and traditional values and institutions?"
"Has the time come to ease unneeded and counter-productive government regulations and restrictions on agriculture?"
OK, so the senator really isn't interested in my opinion. He's interested in my wallet. As the four-page accompanying letter notes, he hopes to use the survey to "contrast the Democrats' liberal 'values' with our own commonsense Montana values."
Whatever Democrat opposes him, he said, will espouse "the same leftist values of Harry Reid, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Ted Kennedy." Indeed, the letter uses the phrase "liberal Democrat" at least 10 times. And it tells stretchers: John Morrison, Burns says, "is a trial attorney whose industry, and the medical malpractice suits it champions, have had more to do with the rising cost of health care than any other one factor!" Jon Tester, Burns says, "has consistently aligned himself with the far left during his tenure in the State Senate." The far left? Who could that possibly be? Possibly the "Hollywood and New York elite who have always resented the western values and traditions" that Burns upholds.
He sums up, "And the cold, hard fact of the matter is, unless I have your maximum political AND financial support right-here-and-now in the fall of 2005 ... I may not be ready for the firestorm we fully expect the liberal Democrats to soon unleash against me across all of Big Sky Country."
A scary thought indeed.

I got the same opinion survey. I'm a Republican voting for someone other than Burns next time around. I just haven't decided who gets my vote yet. It will definitely not be Sen. Burns.
These fund raising letters are crafted by professionals - Burns never laid an eye on it, I'd bet. So it is interesting to know how they size up their own supporters - they are only throwing out lines with fish-tested bait on them. American campaigns all about reaching people who aren't paying attention, but vote.
Mark
Doesn't Burns have at least $3.5 million in the bank already? I'd say he's not exactly caught off guard.
I am republican and I will not be voting senator Burns. So far I am looking at John Morrison. Not too far to the left and doesn't appear to be corrupt.
I am a Republican, and I will be whole-heartedly supporting Conrad Burns, as will most other Montanans. He's done an outstanding job for us in Washington.
I see that the Honorable Sen. Cornhole Burns is still an honorable horse's ass! But I wonder, do you think Cornhole will be able to serve in the senate if he's in JAIL?! For, if little Abramoff decides to sing to save his own arse, he just might include a verse or two bout a Missouri hick who jacked up the Indian tribes! What poetic justice THAT would be! A regular rags to riches story.
He's done an outstanding job for himself, his cronies and the highest bidder in Washington.
Tester and Morrison have admitted they broke the law already:
The Democrats started out with a confirmed they were illegally soliciting campaign contributions through prerecorded telephone messages because they do not agree with the law.

Yeah, that's right. And phoning is bout the same as TAKING ILLEGAL BRIBES, like the hon. sen. cornhole did! Wow! What do you use for logic, pal? Same thing you use for brains?????
Oooopsie! And I see that Sen. John McCain just said that the Abramoff scandal will lead to "lots more indictments"!! Things ain't lookin' real good for Cornhole. Maybe mr. coobs would like to make cornhole a gift of some soap on a roap!, since he believes that cornhole has done "so much good for Montana"???? Whaddayasay, mr. coobs? You gonna volunteer to do any time sen. cornhole recieves??????
I intend to help the Burns campaign in any way I can.
I'm intending to help Cornhole burns too! I mean, if Cornie DOES go to prision, he'll need lots of help. Just like the current campaign to help Tookie, I plan to start a help Cornie site! YOU BET! For you see, I see Cornhole as a political prisioner. He is a politician, and he is a criminal. He might soon be a prisioner. Hence, he's a political prisioner! And just like our fight for Leonard Peltier, Tookie Williams, etc. etc, I think that we should help Cornhole! FREE CORNHOLE! FREE CORNHOLE! (just practicing) And on what grounds you ask should Cornhole be released if convicted? Well, he's a minority! Well, not exactly a minority, but minority hater! I mean, when asked how he lived in D.C. with all them "N's", he responded by saying "it's a helluva challenge!" So, if Corny can't live in D.C. with minorities, how in the hell will he survive in the big house?? Therefore, we must free Cornhole before he goes in! Contact me for your Free Cornhole bumper sticker, coobs!
Mark is right Larry - PLEASE go and help Tester! He needs your help! I hope you support him with the same fervor you supported Al Gore, and John Kerry with!
I might! Far as I know, they're not criminals! Or at least under investigation for criminal acts which will lead to indictment. For you see, fellas, I think that real democracy works best when the criminal element is eliminated. Don't you? Silly question. Sorry I asked. I should've known better. If you did, you wouldn't be working for Cornhole!
Let's see what the rigtwing crowd is saying about the Abramoff/Burns scandal, shall we! "I don't think that we've had something of this scope, arrogance, and sheer venality in our lifetimes. It's building to an explosion, one that could creat immense collateral damage within Congress and in the coming elections"!, Norman J. Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute. Or, Sen John McCain. "There is strong evidence of signigicant wrongdoing by some legislators. I expect a lot of indictments." Sounds to me like ol' Cornie better get hisself bout a twent year supply of soap on a rope! Course, by the time he gets out, he'll be about ninety!, well past his attractive years. So, maybe just a ten year supply otter do him! Well Cornie end up in the slammer? YOU BET!!!
P.S. to my B.S. By the way, I really can't STAND warmongers like sen. cornhole burns who are all FOR sending young men off to die when brave little jarhead Connie NEVER QUITE MADE IT INTO A WAR ZONE! Oh sure, connie was too valuable to head to Korea during the war. So he remained stateside. And about cornie's "two year college degree" anybody besides me NEVER see any proof that connie has ANY higher learning?? I SERIOUSLY doubt that connie has any. That would make his campaign a lie too! Let's see a transcript of some type! Let's prove that cornhole ain't a LIAR too! Any takers?????? NO?? I thought not!
Im trying to think of one positive thing he's done for Montanans.Hes done some good things for the textile manufacturers in the Mariana Islands. He claims to represent Montanans but I believe his views are shared by a minority that is growing smaller by the day and I will work as hard as I can to see him defeated.
If you can't think of anything good Senator Burns has done for Montana, you're obviously not from here.
Conrad has helped bring hundreds of technology jobs to Montana, has helped secure us much-needed federal dollars for projects, has worked to protect our individual rights at every turn, and consistently votes in our best interests, not what the national polls tell him. Don't let bloggers like Larry Kralj do your thinking for you, check it out for yourself.
Just google searched out the names Conrad Burns, and Eric Coobs, and see that Senator Burns gave Eric's daughter a nomination to the AF Academy last year - who says Republicans don't stick together!
As a fourth generation Montanan (my mother's grandfather hit the Gold Creek area in 1864 and ran a store in Virginia City, but that's another story), I think anyone who thinks burns has done anything for this state except earn it more bad mouthing from the national news has been wearing really dark pink sunglasses.
Correction - don't let liberals do your thinking for you - check it out yourself.
And for the record, Katie got her nomination on her own. From both Senator Burns (Republican), and Senator Baucus (Democrat), so I guess you can say I support both of them. In fact, they rarely differ on important issues.
I see that Cornhole made the papers AGAIN yesterday with more of his "folksy" comments. (some people call them assinine! And yes, I know how to spell asinine. But cornhole puts the "ass" in assinine!) Cornhole has done to the nation what judy mars did on a state level. He has made Montana look like a state full of inbred, tobacco-slobberin', hillbilly halfwits! And as far as bringin' home the bacon, what senator CAN'T bring home the bacon for God's sake?! Coobs' argument shows a terrible lack of thought. But anyway, Thursday in Kalispel, Cornhole was off his leash. This is a very scary prospect, for when Cornhole is away from his handlers, he will say ANYTHING!, and he does! Like the time he called the Arabs "ragheads", or the time he called for bombing raids on Canadian fishermen! I mean, does THIS sound like a man of sound mind? But for Cornhole, the ONLY U.S. senator WITHOUT a college degree, this is simply par for the course. Now, in Kalispel Thursday, Cornhole said regarding Abramoff, his very close friend, benefactor, collaborator, and partner in crime, "I wish that he was never born, to be right honest with you. This Abramoff guy is a bad guy, and if he's indicted, I hope he goes to jail and we never see him for a very long time". End of quote. All I can say to that is.........DITTO THAT! If Cornie is indicted, adios, big guy! But really, is THAT any way for cornie to refer to a guy that gave him ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND SMACKEROOS?! Sheesh. To be right honest with you, cornie's not a very appreciative fellow!
Your turn, Coobs. Jump in here. Tell us just how much you're gonna still like cornhole if he gets indicted. For you see, there's an excellent possiblity that he will be charged for criminal activities. Tell us, here and now, it that happens, you still gonna be a cornhole supporter?? And if so, why do you endorse criminal behavior????
Like I've said before - what liberals can't get at the ballot box they hope the courts will give them. Senator Burns has done no wrong here, and my support will be unwavering.
Like I've said before, rightwing wackjobs think that they're above the law! But in Cornhole's case, he may have a plausible defense. No, not that. I know what you're thinking. It's NOT insanity, but rather STUPIDITY! Cornhole has, since he took office, milked the system unlike any OTHER senator! He was a record setter in corporate donations. Hell, he even milked BIG TOBACCO! You see much tobacco growin' in Montana? Me neither! I still remember the time that big tobacky paid for Cornie to go to the Kentucky Derby, and then the Rose Bowl. When asked about such things, Cornie said that he was "lookin' for jobs"! Well, he finally have found one. A fairly steady one. MAKIN' FRIGGIN' LICENSE PLATES! Hey, maybe for my next plate, I'll get a personalized one, maybe somehting like, M8DBYBURNS! Like it? ME TOO!
By the way, coobs, is the irony lost on you? It appears that cornhole, your greazy guru, has the EXACT opposite opinion of the courts! Cornhole WANTS abramoff to go to jail! Now, coobs, think for a moment. Why? Well, even cornhole knows that a crook belongs in jail. So, if you REALLY support cornhole, you'd agree with him that bad guys should 1., either "never have been born", or 2. "spend a very long time in jail"! Which is it? Are you with him or against him?..cornhole that is?
Let's leave people's Children out of the discussion.
Thank you Anonymous -
Logic is a terrible thing, coobs, ESPECIALLY when it's your own, and it's shoved right up the ol' wazoo! And it's a particularly painful affliction when logic must share that rather confined space in one's nether region with the head! OUCH!
