Gone with the Wendy's

I guess this is good news. But then I read this (courtesy of Jackie Corr) and wonder, once again, what sort of monuments we are creating for ourselves.

Its too bad we have no visionairies in Billlings that can build a combined baseball and football stadium in Coulson Park with the $400,000.00 Sam MacDonald has donated along with the millions the Billings Clinic will gladly fork over for Athletic Park.

There would be no homes sitting on the rims if we had visionairies back in 1970 when the person who owned most of the rims from the Airport to Zimmerman trail wanted to sell all that land to the City for a pittance.

A family gave away $400 grand in exchange for a name emblazoned on some plastic grass. Thousands of Montanans will benefit for many years to come, and no one's taxes will be raised. Thank you, Sam and family.

My questions are....why artificial turf? Is it worth $400,000 for Billings? "Wendy's Field at Daylis Stadium" ?

the artificial turf has a life of 8 years. When it is worn out the taxpayers will be stuck paying for the replacement while Sam McDonald got another nice tax break and years of cheap advertising.

It's the new sports motto, which replaces the old. Remember, "boxing has been bery, bery goot to me"? Well, the new motto is, "Whoring has been bery, bery goot to me"! Only whores would change a venerable old name. Articial turf? Hell, this is artificial insemination! Why can't this mcdonald bastard simply be happy with a big sign? It's bull crap, pure and simple. But why stop there?! Let's contact Bill Gates and tell him that we've got a state that could use a new name! Ya think that this mcdonald fella will respect us in the morning?????

The warranty is good for eight years. The grass itself will last indefinitely. The name Wendy's Field remains as long as the turf holds up. When it needs replacement, MacDonald and family will decide if they want to give again to keep the name on the field. Daylis Stadium remains Daylis Stadium. At least get your facts straight before you start spewing your vitriol.

Seriously, can anyone list the advantages to artificial turf for a high school field? Not being ficitious and do respect the generousity.

This donation to Daylis Stadium is great! The natural field is in poor condition. Ask a player or a coach for their opinion. It is good for Billings.

This generous gesture is good for Billings sports and will strenghten the future of Daylis Stadium. How can anyone knock that?

Artificial turf does not have to be grown, fertilized, watered, or mowed. Starting to get the picture?

The artificial turf nowadays is safer than grass. All that's needed is to brush off snow from the surface and it's ready to use year-round. For the first time, soccer games will be allowed on the field. Also, Billings Senior High will be able to use the field for gym classes prior to game days. Whereas, before they weren't allowed on the field for fear there would be damage to the grass. One of the two turf options even has dirt/sand at its base. According to the U of M Griz coaches, the turf has much better traction than grass = fewer injuries.

Yada, yada, YADA! Yeah, but doncha feel just a leetle bit cheesy naming the "field" after a freakin' BURGER joint?! I mean, geewhiz! Ya want extra cheese with your field?! Hey, let's put Mac's name on the toilet tissue too! May as well! And how bout new uniforms while we're at it. Instead of the Senior Broncos, how bout the Senior High Wendy Burgers! Their unis could have little wendy signs on the seat of their pants! Maybe french OOOPS! scuse the hell outta me! little freedom fries on the helmets! I tell ya, some guys will do ANYTHING to get their names in print!

no.

care to tell us how or why blades of plastic grass are somehow sacred? Please advise.

Anonymous said...

No, you wouldn't understand. Just to friggin' STOOPID!

Anonymous said...

Blades of grass are not sacred. Maybe if you got out of your house and went to a game you would see that people actually do have lives in Billings. Fresh air can do wonders for the retentive individual.

"blades of grass are not sacred". Truer words were never spoken, for in the corporate world, NOTHING is sacred! EVERYTHING'S for sale! EVERYTHING is commodified! EVERYTHING needs a logo! Well, I take that back. Profit is sacred. Let me ask you, WHY does this fella need to attach a name at all?! Hey, he sounds like he's been pretty damn fortunate in life. Does he REALLY need to artificially inseminate a corporate name onto a local field? What kinda dink feels the need to do this? A pathetic one I'd say. Sorry, I just don't get it!

I bet you're a hypocrite, too, wearing name brand jeans, t-shirts with logos on them, running shoes that surely didn't come from Payless-- even eating at those despicable "burger joints" and other fast food restaurants that (gasp) advertise.

Anonymous said...

Larry is such a hypocrite. Don't you have a class to teach?

Anonymous said...

There is still hope for retentive individuals. Keep trying.

Anonymous said...

Just for the record it's the Senior High Broncs, not Broncos.

Anonymous said...

How true, my bad. But doncha think, for a few bucks, the Senior High Wendy Burgers sounds a whole lot nicer?! And besides, you won't be offending any minorities or PETA! I mean, Broncs, that's so ethnic! "Bronco" ain't even an American word! It's Spanish. We need a good, American word, what with enemies all around us. And I don't think the Muslims have any Wendys over there. Whaddaysay? How bout the Senior Wendies? I like it!............ya could be the Sugar Beeters, but that's already taken!

Larry, why do you care what a generous Billings business man did. We don't blast Great Falls for taxing their citizens to create a soccer complex- and if a corporation wants to sponsor it, I'm sure the city would welcome it. Go for a run, i think you are oxygen deprived. Maybe only locals should comment on local events. isn't there at least one blog in Great Falls you can harrass?
