While Cal Thomas thinks planting propaganda in Iraqi newspapers is just peachy (most penetrating insight: "Lippmann was possibly being sarcastic"), Christopher Hitchens thinks heads should roll.
My opinion? Start sharpening the ax.
Side note: Why has the report, cited by Hitchens, that Bush wanted to bomb Al Jazeera drawn so little attention? If true, wouldn't that be an impeachable offense? And if it's not impeachable, why not?

Cal Thomas is living proof that America is a great country.
His success is an inspiration to knee jerk hacks everywhere who are willing to pander to their readers worst qualities.
Why pay when the press can be so easily manipulated within the framework of the rules that generally govern the main stream media?
You would miss Al-Jazeera?
David, Cal Thomas is invaluable. You pointed out yourself that Cal thought Lippmann might just possibly have been expressing sarcasm. When I read that in the paper Tuesday morning, I knew I wouldn't have a better laugh all day.
Anonymous, I, for one, would in fact miss Al Jazeera. I think it's difficult to overemphasize the importance of institutions like Al Jazeera in the Middle East. While Al Jazeera may do a lot of things we don't like, it also does a lot of things the rulers don't like either. As de Tocqueville observed, independent nongovernmental institutions are the real key to free society. The fact that Al Jazeera often behaves irresponsibly is just a detail.
I chuckle - we live in a culutre steeped in propaganda, but we only recognize it when we see it somewhere else.

Clinton ordered the unfortunate bombing of the Chinese medical center in I forget which country during the Monica Lewinsky saga. He wasn't impeached for that.
