End the subsidies

I agree: Suspending the federal gas tax is a bad idea. So is a windfall profits tax. But ending direct subsidies makes sense.

I agree that ending the gas tax is a political ploy. But it would be worth it if, as Hillary suggests, the oil companies made up the difference. A windfall profits tax might be a good idea as long as we accept that the oil companies are taking advantage of our administration's mistakes to become the richest countries in the world. Ending direct subsidies is probably a no-brainer as is ending the depletion allowance.

I understand debating tax "A" versus subsidy "B" versus "loophole C", but in the end I always come back to the basic idea that if you are going to spend the money, then you should raise the money. Since we have spent $530 billion in Iraq, then we need to raise $530 billion. It bothers me that neither party nor any pres. candidate seems to be able to talk in terms of raising the money that they want to spend.
